Review: Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Sleeping Mask

By: Sarah Bond

Today's review is Missha's Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Sleeping Mask. It is raved about on websites like Sokoglam and Refinery 29. The serum contains key ingredients like snail mucin extract, deep sea water, and baobab tree extract. The ingredients repair, soothe, and hydrate the skin. With all of the buzz we've decided to try it out and review it for you guys. So for the past two weeks I've been using it overnight. Throughout the article we've added information on sleeping masks, some research on ingredients, and my review. We hope this helps inform our viewers on the benefits of sleeping masks and Korean skincare.

Sleeping masks are pretty much what they are named. Their texture is similar to a jelly or cream and its usually packaged in a tube or small container. At night after your skin care routine you scoop or squeeze out a nickel sized amount and spread it over your entire face and neck. Many believe that sleeping masks are sticky or messy but with a small amount they absorb right into the skin and do not leave a tacky feeling on the surface. These sleeping masks are mostly used for overnight repair or hydrating and moisturizing the skin. In the morning your skin should feel more smooth and have a brighter sheen.

Centella Asiatica Extract

Centella asiatic extract contains a rich variety of naturally occurring nutrients that can beneficially affect the skin. The nutrients are from the substance categories of triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, triterpenic steroids, amino acids, and sugars. These compounds elicit anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-oxidant effects on the skin. Specifically with anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects on the skin, in scientific trials centella asiatic extract in application on the skin of trial groups showed moisturizing effects through increasing skin surface hydration state and decreasing transepidermal water loss. Skin inflammation from trial groups in the same scientific research also was reduced through exhibiting anti-inflammatory responses based on the methyl nicotinate model of microinflammation. Centella asiatica extra was also found to increase the production of type I collagen in fibroblasts leading to increased elasticity and firmness in skin of participants. The anti-oxidant properties of the extract work to reduce the amount of free radicals on the skin to reduce DNA damage in keratinocytes (skin cells).

Deep Sea Water

Deep sea water refers to water gathered from depths over 200 meters. The water taken from these depths are typically rich in nutrients. Being far below the sun's reach bacteria is minimal and there is less photosynthesis of plant plankton. Less photosynthesis means less consumption of nutrients creating a more nutrient abundant water. This nutrient water is filled with minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, chromium, selenium, zinc, and vanadium. A study was conducted with eczema patients using deep sea water as a treatment. Improvement of skin conditions such as inflammation, lichenification, and cracking of the skin was observed. Another study showed that deep sea water can recover atopic skin lesions by improving conditions such as edema, erythema, dryness, itching, transepidermal water loss, decreased skin thickness, and infiltration of inflammatory cells.

Baobab Tree Extract

The Baobab tree, commonly found in South Africa, is regarded as the largest succulent plant. Oil from this tree has been used for many traditional African remedies as a panacea for a large variety of ailments, most commonly burns. The oil has been used for moisturizing purposes as well. This tree extract contains vitamins A, D, E, and F. A and F vitamins are polyunsaturated fatty acids that aid in rejuvenating skin cell membranes. Vitamin E is regarded as an anti-oxidant. Beta-Silosterol also found in baobab tree oil is a plant sterol ester that has anti-oxidant properties. This chemical alone in western medicine is used for a large variety of medicinal purposes. Specifically in skin related uses, this ester is commonly used for treating skin wounds and burns.

Snail Mucin

Snail mucin contains a large variety of helpful nutrients such as glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, copper peptides, and elastin. Hyaluronic acid increases water retention in skin cells by its moisture binding properties. Copper peptides found in snail mucin as well as glycolic acid and elastin aid in wound healing on the skin. In clinical trials of snail mucin topical skin treatment on participants with acne scarring / minor skin wound folds, wound regeneration rate was doubled compared to normal saline solution addition to wounds.

Main ingredients in the sleeping mask target:asdjkhfalksjdhlakjdhflkahd. Centella Asiatica Extract has anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-oxidant effects on the skin. Deep sea water is anti-inflammatory, hydrating, and moisturizing. In a study it also decreased skin thickness, and infiltration of inflammatory cells. Oil from the baobab tree has been used for burns and moisturizing purposes as well. This tree extract also contains anti-oxidant properties. Snail mucin contains nutrients such as glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, copper peptides, and elastin. Hyaluronic acid increases water retention in skin cells. Copper peptides as well as glycolic acid and elastin aid in wound healing on the skin. Other ingredients focus on emollients and humectants and viscosity controlling ingredients. Emollients soften and make the skin more piable. They also increase hydration in the skin by reducing evaporation. Humectants are a type of NMF or natural moisturizing factor found in the skin. NMFs keep the skins moisture in the skin. Humectants in particular are responsible for keeping the skins water under the last layer of skin. Extra ingredients like surfactants, viscosity controllers, and emulsion stabilizers. Surfactants spread the serum evenly so that the ingredients are equal throughout the mixture. Viscosity contollers either thin or thicken the mixture. Last emulsion stabilizers elongate the shelf life of the product.

I used the Super Aqua Cell Renew Sleeping Mask for two weeks. I'm in my 20's and my skin type is dry with a fair complexion and I'm prone to break outs. The directions say to use the mask every two days but I ended up using it more frequent to treat irritation or acne breakouts. Looking at the mask its a cream color but its texture is more similar to a gel cream. When its applied it easily soaks into the skin and turns translucent. The texture becomes more tacky with a heavier layer but with the standard amount I did not experience any messiness overnight. The scent is pungent but I did not particularly dislike it. Its smell is fresh a bit floral. The sleeping mask yielded quick results for me. I experience breakouts throughout that certain time of the month. During these breakouts my skin becomes redder, inflamed, and irritated. My first use of the sleeping mask was during one of these breakouts. The next day my breakout was notably less red and irritated and some of my pimples had disappeared. My scars also faded over the the course of these two weeks. And my dry skin was nourished. Pricing was definitely under what I believe it could be priced at.

After using this product constantly for two weeks it showed incredible results. My acne scars and redness faded overnight and my skin was much more hydrated and soft than is was the night before. I probably will continue to use this whenever my acne flairs similar to a spot treatment. The ingredients added are regenerative, moisturizing, and soothing for the skin. The price is fairly cheap for a fast working sleeping mask that has over 110 milliliters of product. The scent is strong but more a floral fresh scent. Overall I would say that this is one of my favorite products in our store. The results show within one treatment and leave my skin feeling fresh, hydrated, smooth, and soothed in the morning. This is now my go to night repair mask.
